Entering Hotel California: Directly after he apparated away from Hogwarts on the night of the confrontation on top of the Astronomy Tower that led to the death of Albus Dumbledore.

Appearance: Severus is a tall, thin man with black, greasy, shoulder-length hair. His skin is very pale, almost sallow and he has piercing black eyes, a long, hooked nose and what appearance to be an almost permanent scowl. He wears long black robes over black boots, black trousers, a white shirt and a black high-necked jacket buttoned up at the front. He wears the Dark Mark on his left forearm, well-hidden by his sleeves.

Character History: Born of a Muggle father and a Witch mother, Severus Snape is a powerful wizard of distinctly unprepossessing appearance. Growing up in a grim and loveless home, he viewed going to Hogwarts as an escape and an opportunity. He was sorted into Slytherin and discovered to his great disappointment and disillusionment that intelligence, skill and power, while valued in Slytherin, were apparently of little value elsewhere without the physical appearance to go with them.

Mocked and belittled by other students, especially the Gryffindor cabal led by James Potter in his own year who became his personal nemeses, he buried himself into his school work, especially his great passion, Potions. In the face of the constant pranks directed at both himself and his Housemates, he retaliated, something that nearly had tragic consequences in his Sixth Year when he responded to the taunts of Sirius Black and ventured through the tunnel under the Whomping Willow. Coming face to face with the werewolf form of Remus Lupin, he would have died or become a werewolf himself if not for the actions of James Potter who rescued him. He was sworn to secrecy by the Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, and watched in great resentment as Sirius Black was given only the barest of punishments.

His resentment grew when he realised that he now owed a life debt to the boy he hated – James Potter. This resentment and anger was preyed upon by an older Slytherin who had already graduated but he had met on occasion during Hogsmeade visits, Lucius Malfoy, who with clever words and promises of glory introduced Severus to the Dark Lord. Voldemort was pleased with the idea of such a skilled follower and completed the seduction. During his time as a Death Eater, Severus overheard a prophecy regarding the Dark Lord which he did not hesitate to bring to his Master. When Voldemort interpreted the prophecy as regarding the Potters, Severus went to Dumbledore and confessed his actions for reasons he has never explained to anyone other than Albus Dumbledore.

Although this did not prevent the death of James and Lily Potter, Severus was still protected by Dumbledore and given a job at Hogwarts teaching Potions. As a teacher he is demanding and merciless, especially to those not in Slytherin and to Gryffindors in particular, rumoured to be a Death Eater and secretly working for the Order of the Phoenix. His hatred of Harry Potter, the son of James Potter, is legendary, only adding to the rumours. His last act at Hogwarts was to kill Albus Dumbledore before fleeing the school with Draco Malfoy.

Personality: Severus is a cold and forbidding man, tall and dour with a constant scowl on his face. He is harsh and sarcastic with little patience for anyone but especially idiots. This makes him a poor teacher, impatient and cutting, vicious with those who make mistakes and dismissive of anyone who cannot understand the 'fine art' of potion-making. He is extremely proud, almost to the point of arrogance, of his ability in the field of potion making

He is stubborn and taciturn and does not confide in others. He is a man who keeps his own counsel, making other suspicious of him since he will rarely explain what he is doing or why he is doing it in the fashion that he chooses. He is also a skilled Occlumens and Legilimens. He carries an enormous burden of resentment and humiliation from his school days which tends to spill over into his day to day dealings with others and he is capable of holding a grudge almost indefinitely. He is also capable of transferring a grudge to another. He is not above needling others and trying to provoke a reaction.

He respects Albus Dumbledore and will obey him, even if it is often a grudging thing, but he seems to respect few others. He both respects and fears Voldemort but holds himself aloof from the other Death Eaters, rarely indulging in their entertainments. He knows his value to the Dark Lord lies in his skills as potion maker and spy. He does not reveal his thoughts or feelings to others and does not care what others think of him. He will always do what he thinks is necessary.
